Admission requirements:

Grade 12 or Equivalent.

The purpose of course is to enable a person to demonstrate an understanding of diversity in the workplace; an appreciation of the role and positive impact of such diversity and how best to manage a diverse workforce in South Africa.

  • In particular, on completion of this Unit Standard, the learner will be able to:
  1. Recognise diversity, stereotyping and phobias relating to diversity
  2. Understand in which ways various individuals and groups are, or have been, negatively disadvantaged due to discrimination
  3. Discuss how society and communities react to diversity
  4. Promote equality among different people by embracing differences
  5. Comprehend cultural and other differences among people
  6. Relate diversity directly to the South African context
  7. Refer to the South African Constitution and Bill of Human Rights in relation to diversity and discrimination
  8. Discuss diversity in terms of the history of the country
  9. Relate Employment Equity (EE) to diversity
  10. Relate to the fundamental principles of Organisational Transformation and Change Management (OT&CM)

Specific Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand racism, sexism, and other “isms” as a product of a common history
  2. Explain how discrimination and prejudices are experienced by all South Africans as part of daily life
  3. Demonstrate why managing diversity is important in the South African workplace
  4. Actively promote a culture of equality between people of different races, classes, sexual preference and gender
  5. List the solutions that may be available for people to overcome problems experienced with group identity, stereotyping, discrimination, exclusion, and other cultural differences
